Aquatic Invasive Species

Protecting waters of Hawaiʻi from harmful aquatic invaders through prevention, management, and community action.

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program

The Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) program works to control, manage, and prevent introduced pests in marine and inland waters of Hawaiʻi that are causing or could cause environmental, economic, or human health impacts to Hawaiʻi. As a part of DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) sector, we work in close partnerships with various State, Federal, Non-profit, and Private organizations throughout Hawaiʻi.

Why It Matters

Invasive pests degrade habitats, outcompete native flora and fauna, and reduce biodiversity. Protecting our waters from AIS means preserving the balance of Hawaiian ecosystems.
